Coming together as a duo after decades of playing in bands, Bliss'n'Blue's CD "Keep on Walking" preserves a band's instinct to drive a room and rock the house. Using traditional instruments, (resonators, acoustic guitars, ukulele, mandolin, and harp), provides a texture that supports profound lyrics. It took me a few listens to sink into the lyrics because the catchy hooks and their musical skills are strong enough on their own . Reading along with the lyrics provided with the CD reveals another reason to dig this CD. Their lyrics are original and emotionally dead on. The songs tell of the complex feelings that come up in relationships, the crosscut saw that makes life and love such an enjoyable pain in the ass! Check out all the layers of feeling in "Good bye Anna". The powerful rhythm and bouncy hook plays against the word's sober meanings. What I love about traditional music, that often gets lost in the stripped down lyrics of electric bands, are expressions of complex, mature emotions. The phrase "Bliss'n'Blue" says it all. These guys have been around the block musically and emotionally. It is doubly amazing that they are delivering this material outside their native language. There are echoes of many different country's roots musical traditions in this collection. This is a great CD.

If you consider the respect that these German men show to the roots of American music, at the same time bringing their own creativity, this is a remarkable piece of work. "Keep on Walking" is an excellent modern folk CD. When you listen to this CD you will feel like you are in a pub listening to an extremely talented group of musicians having fun entertaining you. This reflects on the excellent production that allows the details of the instrumentation, songwriting, and vocals as well as the personality of the band to shine through. The band is very tight and musically impressive, creating a very pleasing sound mix of acoustic instruments. The songs are catchy and melodic yet unpredictably interesting. We love the guitar licks, melodic chorus, and overall toe-tapping groove of the title track and "The Beggar," two of our favorite tracks. The vocals on this CD have excellent pitch and a swagger, harmony, and raspiness that gives the "Saturday night at the pub" feel to the music. If you enjoy modern folk and/or spending a Saturday night at the pub having a good time listening to a talented band play acoustic instruments, you'll enjoy this CD. Pick up a copy today! !

To often the wrong statement is made that there are no unique music bands any more. Specially bands that are great in bringing a mix of blues, country, stomp beat boogie, rock and some country blues influenced songs. A duo, Ralph Skuban ( vocals, guitar, ukulele, stomp) & Walter Zaeh (vocals, bass, harmonica, stomp), named Bliss'n'Blue align completely to my expectations, a unique mix of above mentioned music styles, this with their own touch added to it. A duo that understands the art of transmitting solid songs in a pleasant way. This is demonstrated in their debut album 'Keep On Walking' with 11 own songs and 2 covers. ('Rolling & Tumbling' of McKinley Morganfield and 'Good Morning Little Schoolgirl' of Sonny Boy Williamson). Skuban and Zaeh proof here to be great songwriters, songs as 'Keep On Walking'‚ 'Shine On'‚ and 'Bliss'n'Blue‚ were as music to my ears. Both have been around in the world of music for quite a bit to come across each other after 20 years and to start with this new project. The songs are not offered in the common traditional blues manner although their instruments would be ideal for this. Let us simply keep it on country blues where this duo was able to add their own sound to, and in my opinion they succeeded in this in a outstanding manner. This album 'Keep On Walking' is not for those wild moments but a beautiful 'Let'sDwell In The Past', 'Blue Woman'‚ and 'Goodbye Anna'‚ are more an enjoyment for the ear. Ralph Skuban and Walter Zaeh demonstrated to be very skilled in their tasks, no pointless beating but more well coordinated as it should be. For those who enjoy a quiet, serene music atmosphere in a sublime mix of blues, country and singer/songwriter are with this Duo at the right address

Die Resonator Instrumente erzeugen unter der Einwirkung von Ralph Skuban und Walter Zäh eine mitreißende Dynamik, die zusammen mit der Stompbox (Nein, es ist wirklich keine Schlagzeuger dabei gewesen) einen ursprünglichen Groove entstehen lässt. Die Bandbreite der Eigenkompositionen beeindruckt ebenso, wie die Neuinterpretationen von Bluesnummern aus den 30er Jahren oder dem auf dieser CD enthaltenen Interpretation des "Passanger" vom Großmeister Iggy Pop. Weniger ist meist mehr, weshalb die beiden Vollblutmusiker sich auf die beiden wesentlichen Dinge konzentrieren. Vor das Hören hat das Duo Bliss’n’Blue das Sehen gestellt. Das Publikum darf vor dem Konzert das ebenso ungewöhnliche, wie optisch attraktive Instrumentarium bestaunen. Gitarrist Ralph Skuban und Walter Zäh, der Mann am Bass, haben auf der Suche nach dem eigenen, unverwechselbaren Klang den Reiz von Resonatorinstrumenten entdeckt. Was vor der Elektrifizierung der Gitarre einer erhöhten Lautstärke diente, nämlich in den aus Holz oder dünnem Stahl bestehenden Korpus metallene Resonatoren einzusetzen, erzielt auch heute noch Wirkung.

Den Beweis traten Bliss’n’Blue im Hempels, dem neuen Programmkeller im Annapam, überzeugend an. Mit „Welcome to the sun“ eröffneten sie einen Abend handgemachter akustischer Musik, die sich gängiger Kategorisierung elegant entzieht. Die beiden Fingerpicker verschmelzen rockigen Drive, Harmonien der irischen Folklore, die tragenden Bassläufe der Country Music und ein tiefes Gefühl für den Blues zu einem kompakten, eigenständigen Klangbild. Als Texter erzählen Skuban und Zäh in englischer Sprache von Lebensfreude und Lebensmut, auch und gerade trotz der Widrigkeiten des Alltags oder der eigenen Biographie. Vorgetragen werden die Songs vom jeweiligen Autor und in den Refrains finden Skubans aufgeraute Stimme und Zähs balladesker Tonfall zu perfektem Satzgesang zusammen.

„Rolling and tumbling“ aus der Feder von Muddy Waters oder „Good Morning Little Schoolgirl“ von Sonny Boy Williamson ergänzen ein abwechslungsreiches Programm bei dem das Augenmerk immer wieder auf die Instrumente von Bliss’n’Blue fällt. Bassresonatorgitarren, weiß Walter Zäh zu berichten, werden ganz selten gebaut. Das mag auch für die Ukulele gelten, die zwar in Ralph Skubans Händen beinahe verschwindet und doch für einen vollen, satten Ton gut ist. Zu dem verhilft auch der Bottleneck, das Metallröhrchen auf Skubans Finger, das für den gelegentlichen Slide-Effekt sorgt. Streift der Bassist dann noch das Mundharmonikagestell über und der Gitarrist ersetzt mit dem rhythmischen rechten Fuß auf der selbstkonstruierten Stomp Box ein Schlagzeug, glaubt man eine mehrköpfige Band zu hören. Jede Menge bliss für das begeisterte Publikum im Hempels!
